Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis [PGD]

The aim of the PGD program is to prevent the passing of genetic diseases, the parents carry, to their offspring. Also used when there is a high risk that the babies can be born with an abnormality like Down’s Syndrome.

In order to do this, an in vitro fertilization procedure is done and from the embryos obtained, one or two cells are removed for study.  Only the embryos that test normal are then transferred to the uterus to continue their pregnancy.

Babies born to this date have shown no adverse effects from the procedure but long terms effects cannot be ruled out, so this procedure is only warranted when the benefits outweigh the possible risks.
