City review

Pereira is part of the territory that UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 2011: the Colombian Coffee Cultural Landscape was founded on August 30, 1863. This city, the capital of the department of Risaralda, is the result of the Antioquia colonization; its citizens conserve traits of that culture, and for this, they are considered friendly and hardworking.

Pereira is a good destination for travelers to get closer to the coffee culture in farms where it is possible to learn about the cultivation of this grain that has given Colombia a good name in the world. In several places near the capital of the department of Risaralda, tastings of different coffee are constantly offered and allow visitors to interact with the people who cultivate the land.

Best activities

Mountains planted with coffee and bananas; and valleys where “guaduas” and sugarcane crops can be seen welcoming those who come to Pereira. In this city and its surroundings, you can practice sports, relax in hot springs, and visit nature reserves and spaces dedicated to culture, among other things.

One of the best plans is to visit the “Ukumarí Park.” Although it is located on the outskirts of Pereira, it is the largest in Latin America, classified as a biopark. You can find a zoo and botanical garden there with a wide range of species of fauna and flora.

Go to the “Plaza de Bolívar” in the heart of the city; there, you will find the monument in the middle of the “Plaza del Libertador desnudo,” which was surrounded in the colonial era by the homes of the most influential people in the city. Today it is a cultural heritage and a meeting place for all social classes, tourists, and artists who usually converge on this place.

What to expect from the city

• Pereira has international airport and therefore it is possible to find direct flights to that city from other Latin American countries. If it is not possible, it is advisable to take flights from Bogota or Cali.

• The climate of Pereira is temperate and oscillates between 15 and 25 degrees . It is recommended to wear warm clothes in the evenings, as the temperature tends to decrease.

• Remember to take your papers in order to avoid any mistimes when you arrive in the country. This includes identity card, passport, visa (if required), among others.

• Pereira has a massive transportation system called Megabús with which you can travel the city in an agile and comfortable way. Also, we suggest the use of public taxis, Uber, Easy Taxi, among others.

• It is important to remember not to change your money in unauthorized places. It uses authorized exchange houses in the city.
